I don't understand comment spam
Thursday December 23, 2004 - Permanent link to this post -
This site, along with many more popular blogs is under attack. In the last two days I've deleted about 100 comments from various posts on here, all of which consisted of a short text (seemingly an extract from something or other) and a link to an online gambling site. Some of them linked to sites selling drugs for gentlemen with a certain physical disfunction.
This, for those of you not in the know, is comment spam. Boffin web-cretins have some kind of automatic super-spammer which fires shit at my website. It is both annoying to look at and a pain in the arse to clear up.
The thing is, I don't understand it. To what end do these bastards do this? Do they really expect my miniscule readership to click through to their scam sites and spend some money? It's not going to happen, is it Jodey, JC, Mum?
I do have some comment spam protection in place in the form of Fahim Farook's Blacklist plugin for Wordpress. The spammers seem to have found their way round that and it's becoming less effective by the day.
A permanent solution would be to switch commenting off altogether. I don't want to do that though. The (very) few comments I get on this site make me smile.
So I'm stuck with comment spam for the time being. DO me a favour though, dear real readers, leave me some comments. Let's get the signal to noise ratio up a bit.
