Northern Geekend: A call to action

Thursday October 6, 2005 - Permanent link to this post -

Myself and DotJay Jon Gibbins and a few others are organising a bit of geeky meetup in the North of England (York to be exact) for the weekend of the 15th October.

There are no firm plans on what we're actually going to do yet but we wanted to get a gauge of how many might be interested in turning up. Events will probably include a pub crawl (York City Centre has 365 licensed premesis within its walls) and some kind of fun, although we're not sure as of yet the extent of that fun, nor the manner in which it will be acheived. I hear tell that there's some kind of Digital Arts festival going on in the city on the Saturday. That could be an option for some. Frisbee in the Museum Gardens might be another option.

I will make clear now, for the benefit of those Southerners who frequent this site, that this is NOT A NORTHERNERS ONLY EVENT. We're quite liberal like that. Wouldn't this be an excellent oportunity for Geeks from across the land to experience the wonder that is North Yorkshire? (answer is Yes.)

All are welcome. Tell your friends. Tell your partners, wives, husbands, lovers and kids. Why not combine the trip with a visit to any one of York's many tourist attractions such as Jorvik Viking Centre (One of the only Centres in York), The York Minster (The Gothic Cathederal where Scott and Charlene got married) or the River Ouse (The only river in the UK that flows in four dimensions).

Accomodation will be provided by the good folks at the Holiday Inn Express and the Travel Inn (or any one of the many high quality sleeping-holes in the City, or if you're lucky there might be spare rooms in the homes of local geeks.

So let either myself or Jon know if you're interested or to ask for more information. And spread the word. The more the merrier.

It sounds like a laugh. I reckon I should be able to make it. I’m in Manchester, anybody want to get in touch to discuss travelling and such?

Peter – good to meet you the other day in London. I’d love to come to this but have just forked out for SXSW, so a trip oooop north (along with many other luxuries) will have to wait for a while :( Maybe next time…

I wouldn’t mind meeting up, only an hour or so away too – although, if there’s beer involved I’ll probably have to get the train since I’m not one for self-control :P

Just taking another opportunity to say ‘Thanks’ to all who came along. It was nice to put faces (and voices) to names. York was a lovely backdrop for it all, too.

Has anyone else got their photos up on Flickr yet?

Ahhh how I wish I’d have seen this earlier. A northern Geekend, sounds just up my street!

As for York, couldn’t think of a better place! Just got back from a weekend there, really really nice. So nice infact, I’m currently looking @ jobs around that location :)
