Pixelicious Is Broken

Sunday May 22, 2005 - Permanent link to this post -

Due to some hosting fuckups Pixelicious is a bit broken. Normal service will resume when I've fixed everything else that was hosted on the same account.

UPDATE: At some point in the last 36 hours my long time hosting company, ASPPHPHosting.com (that's not a link on purpose) fucked something up for the last time. I've been with them since late 2003 and they've fucked up a number of times along the way. They've lost my entire home directory once, and my database another two times. Whenever the service goes down, they're almost impossible to contact, and even more impossible to get an answer from. The only reason I've stayed with them is that for the last year they've been forgetting to charge me. Is that shallow and cheap?

Anyway, it went down today. I was alerted to it by JC, who's Scream - Manchester site was hosted on a subdomain of Pixelicious. On Friday he circulated a link to the site to every Local Education Authority in the UK and was obviously a little concerned by the thought that they might all be met with server errors. So I made the jump. I switched from what was essentially a free 100MB account with 4GB of bandwidth limit to a new host. One I've been wanting to move to for a good long while. Pixelicious (and Scream-Manchester) are now proudly hosted on Dreamhost. The value for money at this place is fantastic. For just $7.95 (about a fiver) a month I get a colossal 2.4GB of storage with a huge 120GB per month transfer limit. Hundreds of this, unlimited that and reputedly very good support. This account rocks my world. And really, it's very cheap.

I highly recommend Dreamhost and if you're going to take my advice and get hosting from them, please either mention Pixelicious as the person who referred you, or use this link. As a referrer I'll get loads of cash when you sign up. SIGN UP!

So anyway... fortunately I'd taken a backup at the beginning of May, and good old Google Cache did the rest. I've managed to restore this site's content (less comments and a few CSS changes I'd made), and I've done the same with Scream. This site's having some problems with sections comments at the moment, so currently only the articles and the About page work, but hopefully I'll have that fixed in a jiffy. I'm putting this down as a Sunday owed to me by ASPPHPHosting.com.

And you never even noticed I was gone, did you?

Update: It seems I've fixed it all. There's just the CSS tweaks I've made in the last couple of weeks to fix now. I'm betting that this whole dabacle hasn't been half as annoying for you as it has for me.

Heh. Well at least I now my RSS feed works now.

I’ll have a look into that again as soon as I get a chance. Cheers for reminding me Jon.

(Oh, and I realise that in replying by comment, I’m annoying you just as much.

Can I be annoying and poke you about the comment count issue please? Covers head

That should be fixed now Jon (Turnip Jon not DotJay Jon). Let me know if it’s not.

The grass everywhere was an experiment, Jon (DotJay Jon). I’ve got rid again now, but it’s led me to think that maybe the green and the grass is a bit heavy. I’ve got a redesign in the making.

    Redesigning again?!? Man…

I like this design, anyway. The “grass everywhere” was cool, but as you say, a bit heavy.

Thanks for fixing the feeds : ).

I gathered you were doing a bit of experimentation. I must admit, it looks a bit strange without the grass down the sides now.
