Fully Qualified Dad-To-Be

Friday March 18, 2005 - Permanent link to this post -

I am now apparently a fully qualified Dad-to-be, having completed my fourth and last Ante Natal class with Nicki.

Over the last four sessions I feel I have learnt a lot about what it will be like to be a supporting partner during the birth of our first child in 5-6 weeks time. I have taken two hours out of work every Friday to sit on a gym mat surrounded by fat teenagers and a midwife, and have watched videos of two women from the mid-1990s giving birth. Videos shot from the FRONT! No artistic camera angles or silhouettes; this was HARDCORE. (Look at my capitals. The impending parenthood is making me go all Dooce).

A breast pump in use. I'm OK with this kind of thing now

Today was about breast feeding, which meant that we all got to look at lots of pictures of breasts. The sense of awkwardness in the teenagers was quite apparent.

So that's it. No more Ante Natal classes and only 6 weeks till D-Day (D is for drop). We're both really excited. Nicki says the fear hasn't set in yet, but I'm shitting it.

Hehe – we’re 28 weeks into our first pregnancy, so we haven’t started AN classes yet. We’ve got all that to look forward to!

Ahh, I remember the birth of my first like it was yesterday… I nearly passed out through fear. Fortunatley, the second one was even worse than the first.

If there is ever a third… I’ll be down the pub!

Good luck and best wishes! :-)

Oh yeah, prepare to cry when you first set eyes on your son/daughter!

At last something that i might be interested in – boobies….

Hope that you’re both doing well and will see you both very shortly i hope.

ps i am writing this on the fifth day of european tour and don’t stink so bad.

Good to have you back on the comments, Jode. Hope the tour is going well. See you soon.

I was the third. Never had a younger brother. I have honestly no idea what it’s like to be a partner in this.

I’m glad I’m far from being part of this. Sounds scary.
